Leatherwork Class

Laptop Sleeve

01 — Pattern Making

We begin by creating the pattern. Fold your paper in half and measure evenly from the folded edge to ensure perfect symmetry. The dimensions should fit your laptop, allowing an extra 1cm on each side for depth.

Once measured, carefully cut out your pattern.

02 — Cutting the Leather

With your pattern ready, select your leather at the table. We aim to minimise waste, so place your pattern close to the edge where possible. Using the scalpel provided, carefully cut around the shape, taking your time and working safely.

03 — Marking & Preparing for Stitching

Mark 2mm in from each edge, then fold the leather in half to form the case. Beginners will stitch along the shorter edges, while those more confident can choose to stitch on the short and long edge. Connect your marked points along the stitching side, then use the pricking tool and mallet to create your stitching holes, keeping the tool at a 90-degree angle for even spacing. Repeat on both sides.

04 — Saddle Stitching

Thread a needle onto each end of your thread. Place your leather into the stitching pony and begin from the folded edge. Saddle stitching involves passing both needles through the same hole from opposite sides. Continue evenly along the seam. At the end, secure with a bar stitch, then step back one stitch and hide the knot neatly between the layers.

04.1 — Cross Stitch

Variation For a more decorative finish, cross-stitching can be introduced. Similar to saddle stitch, but with an added movement over the seam to create an “X” pattern. You can alternate techniques such as three saddle stitches followed by three cross stitches to create a subtle pattern or curved effect along the edge.

05 — Embossing

To finish, we emboss your initials or name into the leather. This step is handled on the press. The leather is stamped at 170°C for a brief moment. Just enough heat to leave a clean, lasting impression without over-pressing.
